The Temple of Dendera is an ancient Egyptian temple complex in Dendera, 55 km north of Luxor in Upper Egypt. It is one of the most important temple sites in Egypt and was dedicated to the goddess Hathor. The complex is located in the district of the ancient provincial capital Tentyris, which was considered an important religious center during some periods of Egyptian history. The current temple complex is one of the best preserved Egyptian temples of this period.

  • Features of the complex include:
  • Hathor Temple (the main temple)
  • Temple of the Birth of Isis
  • Sacred Lake
  • Sanatorium
  • Mammisi of Nectanebo II
  • Christian Basilica
  • Roman Mammisi
  • a barque shrine
  • Gateways of Domitian and Trajan
  • the Roman Kiosk

Nearby is the Dendera Necropolis, a series of mastaba tombs. The necropolis dates from the Early Dynastic period of the Old Kingdom to the First Intermediate Period of Egypt. The necropolis runs along the eastern edge of the Western Hill and above the northern plain.

Abydos is a city west of El Balina, Sohag, and was one of the ancient cities in Upper Egypt. Most archaeologists agree that it was the first capital of Egypt at the end of the Predynastic period and the first four dynasties, dating back to 5,000 years ago. It is located between Assiut and Luxor near Qena. It was a holy city called Greeks-Tennis. Currently it is called Al-Araba Al-Madfuna (Al-Balina) and is about 11 kilometers from the Nile. And there is the Temple of Seti I and the Temple of Ramses II, which are distinguished by the prominent ancient Egyptian inscriptions. This city was the main center for the worship of the god Osiris. The ancient Egyptians made pilgrimages there to mourn the god Osiris, the guardian of eternal life and the god of the west. The oldest boats in history were discovered in the ancient tombs west of the Temple of Seti I, the father of Ramses II, the founder of the nineteenth Egyptian dynasty, which was famous for naming many of its kings after the name of the dynasty until Ramses 11, the founder of the dynasty.

This village is characterized by the abundance of antiquities, as its former name was Al Araba Al Madfuna because all the monuments were under the sand. Not long ago, a large part of it was rediscovered, and it is still being explored and studied a lot.

It is amazing, when you are inside the temple, it takes you to the distant past, where the ancient life and the greatness of the ancestors stand and look at that greatness and time quickly takes you away.”
